When you think of Winter Adventures in Finland, you are often drawn to the Lapland region.
What If I were to tell you that the Finnish Lakeland region equally offers just as much of a winter adventure in Finland as its Northern region counterpart?
Not only this, but the Savo region can be A more affordable option for a fraction of the price compared to Lapland.
Winter adventure activities are still available across the Lakeland region, with many adventure operators on offer, including Husky safari, snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling.
Don’t forget the Finnish Sauna experience, which is perfect in the wintertime across the Savo region. Make the most of all the Finnish lakes on offer in the area to enjoy ice swimming with stunning lake and Finnish forest views.
And bring your skis! The Savo Region of Finland even has its own ski resort, which can be found in Tahko. New accommodation resorts are also available.
There are loads of Stylish Finnish Spa experiences to enjoy across the Savo region. Being surrounded by snow-covered trees and frozen lakes makes it an ideal setting.
Offering easy transport options from Helsinki to Kuopio, the VR train is only four hours away, or domestic flight options to Kuopio airport with Finnair, flights take under an hour.
The quality of accommodation options is also equally on offer compared to Lapland, from high-end luxury to budget comfort for a fraction of the price, with less demand in the wintertime.
Dining is also an experience, with many local restaurants preparing meals sourced from local ingredients, such as wild mushrooms and berries, from the Savo region.
In a nutshell, why not give the Savo region a try in winter time in Finland? The Finnish Lakeland region isn’t just for summer; you might be in for a surprise.
Visit Puijo Tower and themed nature trail
Kick off your winter adventure to Kuopio with a visit to Puijo Tower.
It is the perfect way to take in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Finnish Lakeland landscape and the city of Kuopio.
The tower offers a bird’s-eyebird’ s-eye view of the surrounding forests and lakes, setting the stage for the days to come. From here, you can also see the Kuopio ski jump.
Don’t miss the themed nature trail that winds through the scenic wilderness, offering a gentle introduction to Finland’s natural beauty.
You can also find an excellent restaurant and cafe called Ravintola Puijon Maja, which offers a lovely lunch buffet and is worth visiting. It is located across from the Puijo Tower.
Stay at the Bella Lake Resort in Kuopio
Be sure to stay at the Bella Lake Resort while visiting Kuopio.
Where relaxation is key, nestled by the serene lake, this resort is the ideal spot to unwind and soak in tranquillity.
Enjoy a stroll around the lake, or relax with a book by the water’s edge.
The resort’s peaceful ambience will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the adventures ahead.
My favourite part of the Bella Lake resort room was my private sauna.
I also had access to my very own Ice hole, which I could access from my room balcony.
It’s the perfect Finnish combination experience: having a sauna and then going for a dip in the ice hole. It’s the perfect way to wake up in the morning Finnish style—who needs a coffee?

No Finnish trip is complete without indulging in a traditional sauna experience.
Let the warmth of the sauna immerse you as you relax and detoxify.
This quintessentially Finnish activity is a great way to unwind and rejuvenate, setting a soothing tone for your journey.
This is a great spot to try a selection of different sauna types, from traditional smoke saunas to wood saunas. They even have an ice hole, lap pool, and hot tubs on offer. There are many different spa experiences to try, all included in the one spa pass.
Guests staying at the Bella Lake Resort can access the Kuopion Saana; you must book a time slot.
Dine in Kuopio at Ravintola Musta Lammas, (Black Sheep)
As evening falls, head to Ravintola Musta Lammas, known as the Black Sheep restaurant for a delightful dinner experience.
Known for its eclectic menu and cosy ambience, this dining spot promises a memorable culinary experience.
Savour the delicious dishes crafted with fresh, local ingredients as you wind down for the night.
I loved the wild Mushroom soup, the perfectly cooked pork dish, and the liquorice dessert. Everything here was fantastic, and the wine pairing was perfect.
A must-try dining experience if you’re ever in Kuopio.
Tahko – Guided snowshoe trip to Mäkiautio gorge
Time to leave Kuopio and transfer to Tahko as we explore more of the Savo region of Finnish Lakelands.
Starting with a Guided Snowshoe Trip to Mäkiautio Gorge with local adventure outdoor company, Safarit.
Get ready for an adventurous day with a guided snowshoe trip to Mäkiautio Gorge.
Trek through the snowy landscapes and marvel at the pristine beauty of the gorge.
I like hiking while wearing snowshoes, as the wider steps make navigating through the snowfall much easier.
There is less chance of getting stuck in the snow, where paths can’t be found, so you can create your snow paths.
Your guide will share fascinating insights about the local flora and fauna, enriching this experience.
We ended the trek in a kota, a smokehouse with a warm, open fire and some hot berry juice, which was lovely after a long snowshoeing session.

Transfer from Husky Safari to Suonenjoki train station
Now it’s time to head back to Helsinki, and you can do so by taking a VR train from Suonenjoki train station.
Kuopio and the Savo region are easily accessed by public transport, and you can even fly domestically if you prefer to save time.
