Who wants a new racing game for the Sega Genesis 27 years after they stopped making the console? We do!

One of the best things about the retro gaming scene is that the people deep within it realize how important it is. They realize that this golden age of gaming will never be replicated as we are in a time where a publisher will just turn a game’s servers “off” when they have finished making a profit from it.

That never used to be the case, of course, cartridge-based systems such as Sega’s Genesis / MegaDrive (depending on where you live) carry on working to this day, and a by-product of the fact that they keep on working is that it means interested parties can keep developing new games for them and that this is exciting and not ridiculous, such is the size of the scene.

In fact, we recently spoke about a new Amiga beat ’em up on the horizon, so it should be no real surprise to see a glorious-looking racing game heading to Sega’s venerable old warhorse.

Titled Driftin’ Rage the game comes from Mauro Xavier who was one of the people responsible for the amazing Final Fight MD – a fan-made conversion of the classic arcade beat ‘em-up that didn’t use a scrap of the original game’s code. It was a remarkable achievement.

Featuring a selection of cars and motorcycles to race with the demo video shows the kinds of speeds we can expect and as you can see from the image as well, there are 12 tracks earmarked for inclusion.

The 12 tracks of Driftin' Rage

Mauro describes Driftin’ Rage as “a love letter to great classics from the 16-bit era.” while acknowledging there is still a lot to do.

We can’t wait to get our hands on it. You will be able to play Driftin’ Rage via an emulator, or on original hardware (we assume) if you have something like an Everdrive cartridge to copy the ROM to when it becomes available, although we are also dreaming a physical release could be possible. Who knows?
