Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared on X that the MacBook Pro could be in line for some major upgrades.
Apple looks set to make one of the biggest changes yet to the MacBook Pro. Fresh reports suggest future OLED models, expected around late 2026, could finally come with touchscreens, thanks to new on-cell touch technology.
It’s a move that’s been hinted at for years. Mark Gurman has previously noted Apple’s growing interest in touchscreen Macs, and the lines between iPads and MacBooks are already starting to blur. With iPadOS 26 bringing more desktop-style features, it feels like only a matter of time before the MacBook takes a similar step.
What a touchscreen MacBook could mean
If this rumour sticks, the next MacBook Pro could give users a new way to interact with macOS, alongside the usual keyboard and trackpad. Pair that with OLED displays, offering richer colors and better contrast, and it could make for a laptop that feels closer to Apple’s tablets. We’ve already seen how good Apple’s OLED panels can look in devices like the MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023).
There’s also a chance Apple Pencil support might come into play, opening doors for note-taking and creative work. Still, a touchscreen laptop does raise questions like whether it could affect battery life or simply end up feeling awkward to use.
Why patience might be needed
Of course, nothing is certain. Apple hasn’t always nailed its experimental ideas (remember the Touch Bar?). Adding touch to the MacBook Pro could also drive up costs, and OLED supply issues might slow things down. Windows laptops have offered touchscreens for years, but Apple is usually more cautious, waiting until the tech feels seamless.
Opinion
A touchscreen MacBook Pro would be a big step for Apple’s laptops and a win for users who want more flexibility. It could finally make the MacBook feel as adaptable as the iPad, but don’t expect it to land until Apple is convinced it can get the experience just right.
