The iPhone Air 2 could add the original’s big missing feature

Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air might finally get the camera boost people have been waiting for.

A new leak claims the 2026 iPhone Air (possibly called the iPhone Air 2) could come with two rear cameras instead of just one, fixing a major issue we had with the original, which only has a single camera on the back.

The leaker, Digital Chat Station (via MacRumors), claims Apple is testing out a dual-lens setup consisting of a 48MP Fusion main sensor and a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide, basically mirroring what you get on the base iPhone 17.

The second-gen iPhone Air is said to retain its horizontal camera plateau design. This is the slim bar-shaped module that helps keep the phone thin, suggesting the two lenses will sit side-by-side rather than stacked vertically like on other iPhone models.

This isn’t a small tweak. The iPhone Air’s plateau already crams in a lot of the phone’s hardware to make room for a larger battery below, so squeezing in another camera means Apple’s engineers will likely have to rework the internal layout. But even with the extra camera, the company reportedly remains committed to keeping the phone as slim and light as possible.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to launch the new iPhone Air in the second half of 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. There’s also talk of a third-generation iPhone Air with a bigger screen coming in 2027.

The first iPhone Air, Apple’s thinnest smartphone yet, has seen modest sales, which might affect how widely the second-gen model rolls out. Still, a better camera could make the Air way more tempting, especially for people who felt the original’s single-lens setup just wasn’t enough.

We liked the iPhone Air a lot, however the single camera does hit versatility quite hard. So, this could see one of our biggest issues fixed.

Digital Chat Station has a mixed but fairly strong record for Apple leaks, having previously predicted the iPhone 15 camera sensors and the iPhone 12’s display design. If this latest claim pans out, Apple’s thinnest iPhone could finally fix its biggest flaw.

The iPhone Air is Apple’s most interesting, fun and likely divisive phone in a decade. It’s surprisingly durable, designed with such flair that it feels wonderful to pick up and does what it sets out to do very well. But, there are sacrifices here – and for some, they will simply be too much.

  • Sublime looks and feel

  • Lovely ProMoton screen

  • Great camera

  • Excellent performance

  • Battery life can’t quite match the Plus phones

  • Single camera lacks versatility

  • A hard sell for some when the iPhone 17 is so much cheaper
