The best Assassin’s Creed characters of all time – examined, ranked, and rated

To date, Assassin’s Creed is 13 installments long, which is a fair old release rate for a game that first emerged, cloaked, from the shadows in 2007 in a world that saw Steve Jobs announce the first iPhone, JK Rowling complete the final book in the Harry Potter series and Rihanna released Umbrella (ella, ella – I know, that’s not going anywhere for a while now, sorry.)

We will soon enough be getting a 14th installment as Assassin’s Creed reaches Feudal Japan in Assassins Creed: Shadows due out in November of 2024, but this seems like a great opportunity to look at Assassin’s past, who was good, who was bad and who was just a bit meh.

The series has had its iconic moments and has garnered a huge worldwide fan base that probably nobody will agree with all of these choices, but whoever your favorite lead character is, they are probably going to be here.

So, without further ado, here are the five main Assassin’s Creed characters who helped push the franchise to where it is today. Consider them to be in a sort of order, but yours may differ.

Altair Right, Altair from the original AssCreed is not a good character. You can tell looking back that he certainly wasn’t written with the expectation that the series would carry on this long and players would expect more and more fleshed out lead performers. He almost did not make this list because, well, it’s pretty strait-laced and not much fun. You do not want to get left talking to Altair on your own at the Assassin’s Christmas party. We need to include him though, because without him there may well have been nobody else to follow. 5/10 Altair Assassin's Creed
Bayek of Siwa Bayek of Siwa from Assassin’s Creed: Origins takes us to Ancient Egypt and the Pyramids, and Bayek’s representation of the culture is great. The character is full of fun and humor with a side order of lunatic. He may not come from the best game, but his is a memorable performance. 7/10 Bayek Assassin's Creed
Eivor Varinsdottir The female version of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was so much better than the male version even though they say the same lines, and is quite possibly our favorite acting performance in the whole series, the way Cecilie Stenspil just emanates power and grit. The lines are delivered in stunning fashion, and you get the feeling if she was sitting at your table and you spilled your beer on her, she would take your head off. But there is also an undercurrent of caring in there too. There have been great female Viking performers on the big screen, but this matches any of them. 9/10 Eivor Assassin's Creed
Edward Kenway I mean Kenway is one cool pirate and the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, one of the few AC games that twisted things a different direction. Wonderfully charismatic and well acted, Kenway has a character arc if you stick with him that is both fun to play and also manages to make you care for him as he slowly turns into an Assassin worthy of being on this list in the first place. 9/10 Edward Kenny Assassin's Creed
Ezio Auditore da Firenze It almost seems a cop-out to make Ezio our favorite character in Assassin’s Creed series because it is a bit, well, obvious. The character has been fleshed out over three games and by the time we get to Revelations we see the Ezio we know and love that started way back after the blandness of Altair really comes to the forefront. 10/10 Ezio Assassin's Creed
