reMarkable 3: Release date, features, specs and rumors

As e-ink note-taking tablets go, the reMarkable 2 is up there as one of the best on the market today.

That’s some going, though, given the first reMarkable was met with a lot of criticism over issues with uploading files and loading troubles.

reMarkable 2 addressed those problems to become one of the market leaders in the space, and now everyone’s anticipating the launch of reMarkable 3.

That’s because over four years have passed since reMarkable 2 launched and, despite its popularity, it’s beginning to fall behind a number of its competitors when it comes to certain features, such as email, calendars and e-book storage. It may be the “world’s thinnest tablet” at just 4.7mm thin, but it’s no secret an upgrade is well overdue.

For those who are somewhat unfamiliar with what e-ink note-taking devices are, they have high-resolution e-ink displays that mimic real paper and provide a glare-free reading experience, much like Kindles.

But devices such as reMarkable give users the ability to take notes, draw, and sketch on the screen via electromagnetic resonance technology that makes it seem like they’re writing on actual paper. Then, users can easily organize their documents and sync them to other devices. Think of it as a digital notepad that never runs out.

Anyway, despite it being some time since the last release, there’s very little in the way of actual information to share regarding the potential of a reMarkable 3 beyond the general feeling that it’s imminent.

reMarkable 3: What we know so far

Interestingly, the Norwegian-based start-up hasn’t filed any applications with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) since October 2021, which was related to a new model number for the reMarkable 2.

There is nothing that mentions a reMarkable 3, while there is yet to be any new technology or design patents filed in relation to it, which leads to some believing a third-generation device is still some way off.

As a result, there is literally nothing to go on so far regarding actual specifics. All we’re seeing at the moment is a pretty extensive wish list collated by fans across the web who want to see some pretty significant upgrades when reMarkable eventually arrives.

Display

We’re not alone when we say that while the 226 DPI resolution display on the reMarkable 2 is good enough, it would be nice to see a higher resolution in the reMarkable 3. If it can be bumped up to around 300 DPI, we wouldn’t be asking for much. That’s what you get on the likes of the Amazon Kindle Scribe and Boox.

Given the competition, it’s pretty safe to assume reMarkable will follow suit and go for at least the 300 DPI resolution display for the reMarkable 3.

Display Lighting

Many reMarkable 2 users have complained about the difficulties of using the device in dark environments.

A brighter screen would clearly go a long way towards addressing those complaints, perhaps with an auto-adjustment that will change depending on the device’s external lighting and surroundings.

Either way, it’s clear that’s one of the main things reMarkable will need to address for their third-generation device.

Storage and Battery

The reMarkable 2’s 3000mAH battery capacity already gives users two weeks of life, which is very impressive and, some might say, very adequate. However, an improvement on that would only be a good thing.

Storage-wise, offering more than the existing 8GB internal capacity would be a huge selling point, especially given the likes of the Amazon Kindle Scribe and the Kobo Elipsa 2E offer up to 32GB.

When will the reMarkable 3 be released?

This is a difficult one to call given there appears to be no FCC submissions and nothing in the way of new patent applications. That would suggest a reMarkable 3 isn’t even in the pipeline just yet.

However, some believe we could be introduced to a reMarkable 3 either in late 2024 or early 2025 – but it is an estimate.

How much will reMarkable 3 cost?

Given the question marks surrounding its release, it’s fair to say it’s still very early to speculate on the price of the reMarkable 3.

The reMarkable 2 started at $399 when it launched in 2020, so we might expect the next release to be priced similarly but again, that’s just a guess at this point.
