But while I will never embrace the comeback of the whale tail, after seeing pedal pushers on the spring/summer ’24 runways of designers like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Sandy Liang, and Mirror Palais, I’ve come around to the sleek silhouettes that have little to do with the cargo and hip bone-grazing styles of decades past.

A week before my friend’s first half marathon, she called me and said “I might’ve done something stupid.”

I’d been her go-to person for running advice and positive reinforcement during her training block. She didn’t really need me— she was crushing her long runs and felt good about the progress she had made, so her frantic call was unexpected. I asked what was wrong.

“Well, I felt like I needed to do the full 13.1 miles,” she said. “So I did. Now my butt hurts.”

How long should long runs actually be when training for a race? Well, we’d talked about how most training plans didn’t go up to the full race distance and that it was by design. There was no need to go over 10 miles to have the fitness necessary to complete the half marathon.

So why did my friend go totally against her plan and all practical advice? Her reason: “Just to make sure I could.”

Christine Conti, a running coach and fitness specialist, is familiar with the need to instill confidence in runners throughout the training process and recognizes the fear first-time racers face.

“They’re doing their training and they really believe that if they don’t try it first, they’ll never make it,” she says. “And we’re told in life, ‘practice, practice, practice.’ You don’t want the first time you do something to be the big show, right? But you really shouldn’t do it.”

When I think back to my first half marathon, I remember the doubt and fear. How can you know you can reach the finish line if your longest long run is only 10 miles?

Well, good news: There’s proof you can finish a race without running the full distance first, so you don’t have to try it—and you can avoid a literal pain in the butt.

Why don’t training plans go the full race distance?

Contrary to popular belief, most training plans are designed to go just short of the full mileage of the race you’re running, according to Katherine Campbell, CPT, DPT, a physical therapist, personal trainer, and running coach.

“Typically most general half marathon plans only go to 10 to 11 miles because they’re made for beginners,” Campbell says. “As a beginner or even intermediate runner, you want to make sure you’re recovering enough from your long runs where you can get the aerobic benefits without actually putting too much load through your musculoskeletal system to cause injury.”

This is the same reason your marathon training plan usually only goes up to a 20-mile long run—not the full 26.2 miles.

A more advanced half marathon training plan can go above 13 miles—sometimes up to 16 miles. But the thing is, many runners using this type of plan are faster than beginners who are sometimes running a double-digit-mile long run for the first time and should be conservative with their pace.

“Running faster paces would equal out to the same time on feet as most beginners running 10 to 11 miles,” Campbell says.

That’s the key: time on your feet. Especially when it comes to marathon training where slower runners could potentially be slogging through long runs for hours.

“Anything after a three-hour long run doesn’t have a drastic aerobic benefit, but it does drastically increase your risk of injury,” Campbell says. “As a physical therapist and coach, I will usually cut runners off at about 3.5 hours as a peak long run. A typical ‘average’ pace is usually around a 10-minute mile, and 3.5 hours at that pace is usually 20 miles.”

Half marathoners could go up to 13 miles in under three hours, but every mile out there while you’re tired is a chance for your form to break down. Unless you have excelled in your base training and have already tackled seven miles for your long run, it’s not worth going above 10 or 11 miles for your longest long run.

What’s the risk of running the full distance before the race?

The more you’re running on tired legs after a log training block, you might subject yourself to overtraining.

“Running a full distance before the race dramatically increases your risk for injury,” Campbell says.

In addition to sore and tired muscles, there are other systems in your body that go a little haywire following 26.2 miles. Your cardiovascular system is amped, your kidneys are working overtime to filter waste from your blood during and after your marathon, and your immune system weakens in the hours following such a long distance.

“There’s so much happening on a physiological and musculoskeletal level that if you ran more than 26 miles before the race, you’re risking not giving yourself enough time to recover to actually perform on race day,” she says.

You must tell your brain to stop doubting the structure of the plan, according to Conti.

“Beginners might look at these training plans without understanding the science behind it,” she says.

A well-made plan—meaning one made for you by a coach or designed by an expert—will bring you up to your physiological edge to help prepare your body for the aerobic challenge of a long distance and then back off just before race day.

What is ‘tapering’—and how will this strategy help you run your full race distance?

The point is you don’t want to be out on the road for too long lest you get hurt or sick. You might be wondering why you don’t hurt yourself during the actual race. It’s thanks to the magic of the taper.

During the taper phase in half marathon and marathon training, your body recovers from the high demand of the training weeks before. By reducing training volume and intensity in the weeks leading up to the race, tapering alleviates accumulated fatigue, repairs muscle damage, and replenishes energy stores. Because you’re racing on healed legs, you’re less likely to face injury.

“A nice taper two to three weeks before the race will make your legs fresh,” Campbell says. “Trust that the training, optimal recovery, and fresh legs will get you there.”

How to embrace the unknown of the last few miles

So you don’t want to get hurt. You don’t want to get sick. You’ve decided to follow your plan and have vowed not to go the full distance. But you’re still nervous. Mentally, how should you deal in the weeks leading up to the race?

It’s about trusting yourself and the training you’ve already done. As many old-school coaches will say, “The hay is in the barn.”

“I remind my clients that you should be looking at the amount of miles you run per week,” Campbell says. “You’ve trained your body to run the distance if you have been averaging over 26 miles per week for a marathon and 12 miles per week for a half marathon.”

If you can convince yourself that you’re physically prepared, you’re mind should settle down.

“For me, my first marathon was a bucket list item. I thought the people who ran these races were superhuman. I had no idea your body could actually run or perform for that amount of time without dying. But I trusted that if I followed the plan, I would do it.”

For her first half marathon, Conti never ran more than a nine-mile long run.

How to mentally preparing for the final stretch of your race

There are some tricks to help the last miles fly by. First, ask other runners about their experiences in the last couple miles of a race. For me, the last two miles of my first half marathon were exhilarating. I celebrated each step I took after the 11-mile mark because every step represented the farthest distance I had run in my life.

My first marathon was a little different. The last three miles were a total pain cave, but there was no freaking way I was going to give up. You’ll feel the same way.

Aside from sheer determination, here are other tactics to pull you to the finish:

1. Use the crowd

At big races, crowds will line the street leading up to the finish. Their cheering will create an electric atmosphere.

“A fun tip I like to give my runners is to have your friends and family scattered throughout the last few miles to give you that extra energy boost, too,” Campbell says.

2. Break up the distance

You might be doing this throughout the race, but it’s especially useful in the last few miles.

“It’s all mental,” Conti says. “Think about it like, ‘Oh my gosh, all I have is a 5K left. I’ve done this a million times.’ Or ‘I have six miles. That’s two 5Ks. That’s easy.” You’re almost done. And if you have to give yourself some grace and walk a little bit, you’re still going to make it. You’re going to be fine.”

3. Repeat a mantra

Both Conti and Campbell say mantras are a proven way to keep your mind right as you go into the last miles of a race.

“I am all about mantras,” Campbell says. “Find one, practice it, and keep saying it.”

Campbell also suggests writing down one win each week throughout your entire training cycle.

“Read all of them and come up with three positive reasons before your race that remind you that you’re prepared for the race,” she says.

Conti has another perspective that can make the last bit of your race go faster. Think of your half marathon as only 12 miles or your marathon as only 25 miles.

“Because the last mile you run with your heart,” she says.

Special Counsel Jack Smith has tried again to get Trump to stop endangering the lives of law enforcement officers.

The Special Counsel wrote in a new motion related to the classified documents case:

The Government moves to modify defendant Donald J. Trump’s conditions of release, to make clear that he may not make statements that pose a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case.

The Government’s request is necessary because of several intentionally false and inflammatory statements recently made by Trump that distort the circumstances under which the Federal Bureau of Investigation planned and executed the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago. Those statements create a grossly misleading impression about the intentions and conduct of federal law enforcement agents—falsely suggesting that they were complicit in a plot to assassinate him—and expose those agents, some of whom will be witnesses at trial, to the risk of threats, violence, and harassment.

The Court has an “independent obligation to protect the integrity of this judicial proceeding,”

A condition of release that prohibits the defendant from making statements posing a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case is warranted and necessary here. Such a prohibition will also minimize further prejudice caused by the defendant directing false and inflammatory messages regarding the facts of this case to potential jurors who may be summoned by the Court for jury service in this matter.

Prosecutors argued that without medication of Trump’s conditions of release, the ex-president could not tamper with witnesses and juries. Judge Aileen Cannon rejected Smith’s first attempt at a gag order, so the Special Counsel is trying again.

It seems like Cannon’s constant protection of Trump from the bench will be appealed at some point. Special Counsel Smith appears to be attempting all reasonable remedies to protect witnesses and jurors.

If Trump’s speech isn’t limited, we all know what he is going to do. Trump has been relentless in his efforts to tamper with his cases.

Judge Aileen Cannon is letting him get away with it, but Jack Smith isn’t stopping his efforts to protect witnesses, jurors, and law enforcement members.

More than two-thirds of British politicians have had their data leaked to the dark web, according to the latest data.

68% of British politicians currently sitting in the House of Commons. That includes some who are supposed to be in charge of the UK’s cybersecurity.

The new data stems from a joint investigation between digital risk firm Constella Intelligence and privacy service Proton. Out of 650 MPs, 443 have had some form of personal data using details exposed on the dark web, mostly gathered from third-party services MPs have signed up to via their parliamentary email addresses.

This compares to just 44% of EU MEPs. While that’s still a worrying percentage at just under half, French deputies and senators had the best security, with only 18% of searched emails appearing in hacker exchanges.

“The fact that these emails, which are publicly available on government websites, are on the dark web isn’t a security failure by itself,” wrote Richie Koch, editor for Proton. “Nor is it evidence of a hack of the British, European, or French parliaments.

“Instead, it shows that politicians used their official email addresses to set up accounts on third-party websites (which were later hacked or suffered a breach), putting themselves and the information they’re entrusted to keep safe needlessly at risk.”

What personal data from MPs were hacked?

216 plain text passwords associated with MPs’ accounts were exposed on the dark web, breaking down to including up to 10 passwords exposed for a single MP. However, parliamentary emails were the biggest piece of data involved, being exposed 2,110 times. Those most frequently targeted faced up to 30 breaches.

While emails may not seem like a major concern, the combination of those with passwords can unlock a lot more doors to users’ online accounts. Cybercriminals will often use the tactic of ‘credential stuffing’ to enter thousands of stolen passwords and emails into different platforms, in the hope of gaining access to different accounts.

What’s more, some social media profiles were also affected, including 16 breaches of Instagram profiles, 117 of LinkedIn, 21 of X, and 21 of Facebook. This risk to personal information on social media profiles.is especially alarming.

This isn’t the first time that the UK government has suffered a data breach, with an accusation leveled at China for hacking the British Ministry of Defence.

OPINION: Last week I had the chance to see a sneak preview of Google’s AI plans for its Chromebook Plus range.

I was able to test out those same AI features on a Chromebook supplied by Google, but instead of moving back to my trusty Windows laptop after the news became public, I have since stayed put. Using that same Chromebook as I type this, I’ve come to realise one thing: Google’s laptops could finally be ready to have their day in the sun.

Even though Chromebooks have been on the market since 2011 and now command a respectable portion of the laptop market, I haven’t been able to shake the notion that they are only really suited to students in need of a cheap yet reliable laptop to see them through their studies.

Aside from the fact that I haven’t used a Chromebook since university, the understanding that these devices revolve around Google’s ecosystem hasn’t exactly dissuaded my opinion of them.

After all, Chromebooks are never going to offer up the same amount of raw power that’s possible on Windows and MacOS, and there was always the issue that if you didn’t have an internet connection, a Chromebook was about as useful as a doorstop.

Using a Chromebook in 2024

All of these issues worked against me using a Chromebook as my daily work laptop but in 2024, I have come to realise that Chromebooks (and in my specific case, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515) offer up everything I need in quite an impressive way.

For starters – and I’m sure this is the case for any many others reading this – the entirety of my workload revolves around the Chrome browser. Whether it’s subbing articles, assigning work, responding to emails or diving into a Zoom call, it all happens in-browser. It’s the first thing that gets booted up and the last program to be shut down.

Online applications have come so far, particularly with the boom of cloud storage, that there’s very little that you can’t do in a browser these days, and what helps is the fact that unless you’re forking out for the fastest processors, Chromebooks (as one would hope) offer a speedy version of Chrome.

That speed also applies to an incredibly quick start-up process wherein I can honestly open up the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 and get straight into my emails in about 30 seconds. I can’t remember the last time I used a Windows laptop that ran that quickly, and now I’m hooked.

The same also goes for battery life. Only now that I’ve been using a Chromebook Plus for over a week have I realised how often I kept monitoring the amount of juice left in the tank on my Windows laptop.

Because ChromeOS is far less power intensive, I’ve largely been able to forget about the battery life, never feeling bamboozled by a sudden drain in the background. What this means is that whenever I do decide to work from a local cafe, I’m not dreading the idea that I might not get a table next to a power outlet.

All of this has made me realise that for a section of the working population that relies almost exclusively on web-based applications, you’ll get on perfectly well with what Chromebooks have to offer, and if you’re on a budget, I don’t think you’ll get quite the same value for money elsewhere. I only wish I’d given Chromebooks a second chance sooner.

You probably know this already, but Amazon Prime Day is an annual sales event that usually takes place over the course of 48 hours during the summer. Prime members will be treated to big discounts on a whole range of products, including a lot of the latest tech that features on our site. We’ll be throwing a spotlight on all of the best offers we see, but if you just want to know how best to be ready for the event, you can jump straight to our section on the five best tips for Prime Day.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

We don’t know the exact date of Prime Day 2024 just yet, but Amazon has confirmed that it will be in July. This is no surprise — since the first Prime Day in 2015, it has been held in July almost every year, with the pandemic causing a couple of exceptions. We also can’t be certain it’s a two-day event this year either, but that would be a safe assumption.

It’s just our guess, but as Prime Day is usually held from Tuesday to Wednesday of a week in early-mid July, there’s a very good chance it will take place on July 9 and 10 this year. The outside bet would be the following week on July 16 and 17.

While not always the case, it’s likely that Prime Day will be on the same date in every country this year. The countries where it will take place are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the US, and the UK.

Will I need an Amazon Prime membership?

In recent years, not all of the deals have required you to have an Amazon Prime subscription. Just as a rising tide raises all ships, Prime deals seem to trigger a host of other discounts on the site. This also applies to other retailers. You can be sure that the likes of Best Buy and Walmart will be running parallel summer sales events to catch your eye while you’re in spending mode.

That said, the majority of the best deals will only be available to Prime members. The subscription is $14.99 per month, which drops to $7.49 for students or $6.99 if you have qualified government assistance. As well as unlocking the top Prime Day offers, you’ll get all of the other perks of Prime for a month, such as Prime Video and free monthly GrubHub Plus membership.

If you’ve never been a Prime member, the good news is that there’s a 30-day free trial that you can activate solely for the purpose of scoring the best deals. You can sign up for it here. Our five best tips for Prime Day

There are some very simple bits of advice we can give you to make the most of Amazon Prime Day 2024. Here are our five top tips.

1. Start early 

It used to be that you wouldn’t see any deals until the official Prime Day period, but all retailers are now trying to get ahead of each other. It’s the same reason that Black Friday now seems to last for all of November. There have been ‘Prime Day deals’ available before the event in recent years, so get your Prime membership sorted early and start keeping an eye out for deals from the beginning of July.

2. Get deal alerts on products you want

While some people will be keen to splurge their cash on any bargain, most will have a specific product or type of product in mind. Once you have your Prime membership in place, you can set alerts on the Amazon app to get notifications when the product you want goes on sale. Go to the Prime Day event page on the app to set them up.

3. Look out for special deals

Amazon has added more innovative ways of delivering offers in recent sales, and there will be some special deals that are worth looking out for. For example, there were invite-only deals last year, which allowed you to request an invite to buy a product at an excellent price. Only a proportion of those who showed interest would then be invited to buy. These are often among the best discounts, such as getting 75% off a smart TV.

4. Check Amazon multiple times per day

Another type of special deal you might be more familiar with is Amazon’s Lightning Deals. These will also offer some amazing opportunities to save during Prime Day, but they can be snapped up very quickly. Check the site a few times per day during the sales event to avoid missing them.

5. Use a price tracker

Unless you regularly check the price of a product the rest of the year, you won’t know how good the deal you’re seeing on Prime Day is. It might be a rare chance to get the lowest price ever, or it might have actually been cheaper a few weeks earlier and nothing special. There are price trackers that can help you check this, such as the CamelCamelCamel or Honey Chrome extensions.

We don’t yet know what deals will be available during Prime Day, and you can be assured that we’ll be highlighting the Android Authority favorites once they go live. But the offers will be very wide-ranging, so if you’re interested in the latest Android phones, smartwatches, tablets, and so on, there’s a very good chance you’ll be able to get it cheaper on Prime Day.

One range of products you can be sure will be on sale during the vent is the Amazon devices. Popular hardware such as the Kindle e-readers, Echo smart speakers, Fire tablets, Fire TV sticks, and smart TVs, will have big discounts applied — possibly 50% off or more in some cases.

Should I shop on Prime Day or wait for the next sale?

That won’t be the case for every product, but it’s common for some devices to drop to an all-time low price on Prime Day. My advice would be to keep an eye on the sale and follow the tips above, then decide if you’re happy with the prices you’re offered when they arise without feeling the need to splash the cash if you’re not.

A summer breeze might make you feel fine—and so can the fresh fruit you’re bound to enjoy during the warmest months of the year.

This season’s produce is arguably the sweetest: Juicy berries, melons, and tropical fruits for apps and desserts make everything feel a little more festive (and delicious). If you anticipate hosting a party or get-together to have such delicacies at the ready, it’ll be in everyone’s best interest to be mindful of how you prepare and serve your fruit.

Ahead, discover the top tips and tricks—and the most common mistakes to avoid—when it comes to serving cut fruit. We’ll also go into how concerning the worst case scenario may actually be.

Potential risks of preparing pre-cut fruit

The biggest risk around eating cut-up fruit lies in the cutting itself, according to food safety expert Trevor Craig, corporate director of technical training and consulting at Microbac Laboratories. “This can be from the knife (or other cutting instrument) being contaminated during the process, or from the outside of unwashed fruit,” he explains. “As that fruit is cut up, bacteria—including potentially dangerous bacteria like Listeria, Salmonella, or E. coli—can be introduced.”

Fortunately, he says that in most cases, these bacteria won’t be dangerous to eat. (Cue the collective sigh of relief.) Still, certain types of bad bacteria may pose heightened health risks in vulnerable people such as children, older adults, or those who are immunocompromised.

If and when food-borne illness does occur, it can last for up to a week, triggering symptoms including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever, per the CDC—so it’s absolutely worth taking the proper precautions to reduce the odds of it occurring.

Worst case scenario aside, Craig says the primary problem with cutting your fruit in advance is accelerated aging. In other words, it’ll lose its quality, composition, and nutrient content more rapidly once cut. “When you cut through a fruit, you are exposing it to the outside and introducing all new variables, including changes in moisture, air (and oxygen), and bacteria,” he explains. “This can make some fruit start to brown quickly within a few hours, but it also means the bacteria can start to eat that fruit and break it down much faster than if it was not cut.”

Avocados, for instance, are infamously among the quick-to-browning bunch—and while the discoloration on your guacamole might not be ideal for presentation’s sake, rest assured that it’s totally safe to eat. Craig adds that pre-cut fruit may turn watery or mushy more quickly than you’d like… and you might even find some slime or growth on the surface. In these cases, you’ll probably want to avoid serving these to guests.

Some summer fruits are riskier to cut in advance

While you don’t need to stop washing and cutting fruit in advance entirely, you might want to prepare certain ones on the day you plan to consume or serve them. First on the list: cantaloupes. “Cantaloupes have been associated with several recalls because their bumpy outside can be difficult to clean, making it easy to transfer bacteria from the outside to the inside of the melon,” Craig explains.

When pre-cut and packaged together, berries, too, “are easily cross-contaminated because of their soft outside.” Chances are you won’t need to slice up your blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, but strawberries might be another fruit you’ll want to prepare just before serving.
