Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment’s next role-playing-game, is indeed delayed, Xbox confirmed in a post to X over the weekend. Xbox tried to give it a lighthearted spin, saying it was doing it “to give players’ backlogs some breathing room.”

Avowed is now slated for Feb. 18, 2025. In January, rumor had it the game would not make its 2024 launch window, but neither Microsoft nor Obsidian confirmed anything.

At the time, The Verge’s Tom Warren, reporting in that publication’s paywalled newspaper, said he understood the delay was meant to avoid a traffic jam of big releases on Xbox Game Pass. Also, in June, an official blog post from Obsidian gave a Nov. 12 launch date before it was quickly scrubbed.

Why was Avowed delayed by Xbox?

Xbox gave no official reason for the delay. They paired the news with a reminder that Xbox will have more coming from Gamescom (which is Aug. 21 to Aug. 24) with a big livestream on Aug. 23, where Avowed will be showed once more.

Avowed is an action-role playing game set in the same universe as Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series, both of which were eventually published on consoles, with Microsoft and Obsidian honoring a commitment to release the game on PlayStation 4 in 2020 following Xbox Game Studios’ acquisition of Obsidian in 2018. Fans can expect a shorter, if not more compact RPG similar to 2019’s The Outer Worlds, rather than the sprawling, epic RPG for which Pillars of Eternity was known.

Avowed, of course, will launch only for Xbox Series X and Windows PC.
