Huawei has unveiled the world’s first triple-foldable phone, with a price tag of $2,800. The Mate XT Ultimate Design was announced on Tuesday (September 10), only hours after Apple revealed its new iPhone 16 range.
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design key specifications
The dual-folding, triple-screen phone unfolds into a 10.2-inch tablet. It is approximately 3.6mm thick at its thinnest point — making it slimmer than Google’s 5.1mm Pixel 9 Pro Fold. When fully folded, it measures in at 12.8mm, only slightly thicker than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s 10.1mm and the 12.1mm Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.
The Chinese tech giant states that the display has a special hinge system, involving “two tracks working in tandem to support inward and outward folds.” This makes it easier to switch between the dual and triple modes.
Camera
The smartphone has a triple-lens arrangement housed in an octagonal camera module, consisting of a 50MP main camera. It also has a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP periscope camera sensor.
The rear camera section sports a 5.5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom. There is an 8MP selfie sensor with multiple shooting and video modes on the front side.
AI features
Like many phones these days, Huawei is also expanding its AI options. It has an upgraded Celia assistant running on the Pangu Large AI model, which gives users the chance to test out voice editing features, as well as try out a split-screen mode to answer questions and extract summaries from long articles. It will also be able to translate content and have AI image editing tools.
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design price
The price starts at around $2,800 (19,999 yuan) and goes up to $3,370 (23,999 yuan) or so depending on the storage space. While it’s currently only available in China, it has already received over four million pre-orders, according to the company’s online store. International Data Corporation reports that despite U.S. sanctions against Huawei, the smartphone firm is still ahead in the foldable race. Meanwhile, Apple’s first foldable is not due until 2025 at the earliest.
