Google has officially beat their competitors as they have just launched Gemini Live which is a mobile conversational AI with advanced voice capabilities.
The tool encourages free-flowing conversations where users can ask questions, practice important discussions, and chat about new ideas. The Google team has described it as being like having a “sidekick in your pocket who you can chat with…”
Gemini Live is being rolled out this week (starting from Tuesday, August 13) but will only be available in English to Gemini Advanced subscribers on Android phones. It will then expand to iOS and other languages in the coming weeks.
The technology giant has been able to release the tool ahead of OpenAI who are also working on a voice mode, but one that is still in its limited alpha phase.
The voice capabilities with Google are possible through a hands-free approach too, with the team writing: “You can keep talking with the Gemini app in the background or when your phone is locked, so you can carry on your conversation on the go, just like you might on a regular phone call.”
Google Gemini Live will be integrated with apps and extensions
The AI will be integrated with all the Google apps, allowing users to access all information in one place.
New extensions are being launched in the coming weeks including Keep, Tasks, Utilities, and YouTube music. The Calendar extension will be coming soon too, with Google including the example of snapping a photo of a concert flier and asking Gemini if you’re free that day. It can set a reminder to buy tickets if your calendar shows you won’t be double-booking yourself.
With all of this new information to handle, the team has put in measures to try and prevent inaccurate information.
“Ironically, using large language models that can better interpret natural language and handle complex tasks often means simple tasks take a moment longer to complete.
“And while generative AI is flexible enough to complete a wide array of tasks, it can sometimes behave in unexpected ways or provide inaccurate information.
“To help address this, we’ve incorporated new models like Gemini 1.5 Flash that are faster and provide higher-quality responses.”
