Introduction

The air purifiers that work really well tend to be big and bulky – and have a rather clinical look. However, the Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier is stylish, and can be color-coordinated to match any décor style.

The tabletop can also be used to hold light items, like a book or smartphone. More importantly, the air purifier has excellent CADR rates for removing smoke, pollen and dust quickly. It can also be controlled via the onboard digital buttons, smartphone via the app, and also via voice assistant.

Design and features

  • Sleek Scandinavian design
  • Works with Blueair app and voice assistants
  • Choice of 6 pre-filter colors

The Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier arrived in a branded cardboard box. Everything was securely packaged to keep the contents safe. The box included the air purifier (with the filter already installed), pre-filter, and user manual. The purifier is neither big nor heavy. It has the following dimensions: 17.2H x 15.5W x 15.5 D, and weighs 13.2 pounds.

The Blueair Blue Signature is very well designed. It’s sleek and compact, and looks more like a piece of furniture than an air purifier. Recessed handles on either side make it easy to transport when moving from room to room.

The air purifier comes with a fabric pre-filter that’s designed to capture dust, pet dander, hair and other large particles before they can reach the main filter. Mine came with the Nordic Fog color filter, but other colors are sold separately for $24.99, such as Warm Grey Dune, Archipelago Taupe, Midnight, Night Waves, and Aurora Green. If you like to coordinate the items in your home, the option to change color is a handy feature to have.

The pre-filter is designed to catch larger particles, such as cat hair. To keep it working and looking nice, this pre-filter can be vacuumed and, when necessary, also washed. I was able to easily remove the filter from the air purifier (just slide the fabric down to take it off). I tossed it into my washing machine – laundering in cold water – and then dried it on a gentle cycle. (Note: the company recommends air drying, but I didn’t think drying on a gentle cycle would hurt.)

After taking the pre-filter off, the main filter is exposed. On some air purifiers, the filter simply slides up to remove. However, on the Blueair Blue Signature, I need to unlock the filter by pulling open the connector. I’ve never seen such an elaborate process for removing the filter; however, it was easy to unlatch.

After unclasping the connector, the main filter is exposed, which consists of a pleated particle filter on one side, and a carbon filter on the other side.

You can also choose to get wooden leg bases for the air purifier, but they’ll cost you $79.99. The legs are helpful if you want to increase the height of the air purifier or you just don’t want it sitting directly on the floor. While swapping the color of a pre-filter is totally optional, I think legs should be included (and they are with Blueair’s Dust Magnet).

Controls are on the top front of the air purifier. They include display lock, fan speed, on/standby, auto mode, night mode, and the digital display information area. This is where the air purifier displays notices such as a check mark and scrolling text with the words “the air is clean,” to indicate that then air quality is excellent.

When you select a fan speed, this is also where that information is displayed, and current air quality numbers are shown here as well. One cool feature is that the display is motion-sensing, so if the air purifier is asleep, and I wave my hand across the top, or even come close to the air purifier, it turns on automatically.

There’s a light on the front of the air purifier that serves as the air quality indicator. It’s blue for excellent, green for good, yellow for moderate, orange for polluted, and red for very polluted.

Aside from the controls and the digital display information area, Blueair states that the rest of the air purifier’s top can be used as a tabletop surface for lightweight items like a smartphone book on top. However, the company warns against placing liquids or wet items, chemical items, hot items or items that heat up, or anything weighing more than 11 pounds on the tabletop surface.

The Blueair app is quite helpful. For example, the display on top of the air purifier only displays PM 2.5 particle levels. However, on the app, I can also view PM 1 and PM 10 particle levels. I can also control the fan speed, and the air purifier in auto, eco, or night mode. I can also adjust the device settings, set schedules, and access a digital copy of the user manual.

Performance

  • Cleans air very quickly
  • Built-in sensors display PM 2.5 (PM 1 and PM 10 on the app)
  • Very easy to use friendly

As stylish as it looks, performance is where the Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier really shines. It has some of the highest CADR figures that I’ve seen: Pollen at 450, Dust at 434 and Smoke at 455.

The fabric pre-filter captures large particles, like dust and hair. I frequently needed to vacuum the pre-filter – which is a good thing, as this meant it was doing its job. I think you can only vacuum a pre-filter so many times (for me, it’s four or five times) before it’s best to wash it to ensure a more thorough cleaning.

It’s important to keep the pre-filter clean, since it captures particles before they reach the main filter pack – and this helps the filter to last longer. The air purifier uses HEPASilent filtration technology that is designed to capture airborne pollutants as small as 0.1 microns. According to Blueair, the OdorFence technology captures and breaks down odor gases.

I have a smoking neighbor – and I’m thankful that I get to test air purifiers! One day, I walked into my bedroom, and smelled the distinct stench of stale tobacco smoke. I turned on the Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier, selected the high speed, and in 5 minutes, the air was fresh and clean.

On another occasion, I was using a humidifier (made by Blueair, incidentally), which, by the way, negatively impacts air purifiers. The Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier turned yellow and then orange, and I turned the humidifier off. In auto mode, the air purifier’s fan speed adjusted itself, and in less than six minutes, it was back to blue, indicating the air quality was excellent.

I tend to keep the air purifier in auto mode most of the time, whether it’s in the bedroom or the living room. The Blueair Blue Signature Air purifier does a very good job of capturing and eliminating smoke and odors, and I’ve also noticed that I don’t have to dust as often.

The air purifier is also quiet, usually around 37dB when it’s on auto or the lowest setting. Of course, it gets louder as the speed increases, and at the 4th speed, it’s around 55dB. Admittedly, that’s loud enough to notice, but much quieter than, say, a vacuum cleaner.

Should you buy it?

You should buy if you need to clean the air quickly

With above-standard CADRs, the Blueair Blue Signature removes pollutants much faster than most air purifiers.

You should not buy if you don’t like cleaning pre-filters

If you have pets and/or a dusty or smoky home, the fabric pre-filter is going to attract and capture all of those pollutants, so you’ll need to vacuum the pre-filter often and wash it regularly.

Final Thoughts

The Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier is everything an air purifier should be: effective, attractive, user-friendly, and unobtrusive. It has some of the highest Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) figures of any air purifier I’ve tested (and I’ve tested over 50). The ability to quickly remove smoke, dust, and pollen from the air is the single most important trait in an air purifier, and the Blueair Blue Signature Air Purifier passes that test with flying colors.

The fact that it’s also beautiful helps, and the user-friendly controls makes it easy to use. At $449, it’s not the cheapest product, but it’s money well spent if you need to keep the air clean. For different choices, see the guide to the best air purifiers.
