Nintendo has announced a fresh edition of everyone’s favourite lockdown game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, built for Switch 2 – while also giving the original game a generous free update.
New upgrades for the Switch 2 include 4K graphics in TV mode, mouse-style controls via the right Joy Con 2 for cleaner decorating and design work, a handy in-game megaphone that uses the console’s mic to call villagers, online play for up to 12 players, and CameraPlay to see friends through a compatible USB camera while you wander.
This is a quality of life bundle that makes a familiar island feel new again.
The free update arrives for both versions on the same day, which is where it gets fun for everyone. Kapp’n’s family opens a pier-side resort hotel where you can outfit guest rooms and browse a souvenir shop.
Storage climbs to a roomy 9,000 items, and you can stash trees and shrubs now, which organised players will love. Resetti returns with a Reset Service for clean starts.
There are collaborations too, from classic Nintendo items to LEGO sets, plus support for select Zelda and Splatoon amiibo to invite certain characters and unlock themed goodies.
Nintendo Switch Online members can visit Slumber Island to design and save up to three islands with friends, building together in real time.
With mouse-like input on Switch 2, layouts snap into place faster and you get more control over the tiny details that make a room feel yours.
Both arrive on January 15, 2026, with the new edition costing $64.99/£54.99 for those who are coming in fresh, and there’s a $4.99/£4.19 paid upgrade for existing owners who jump to Switch 2. This seems like the right kind of welcome back gift for a game that already knows how to keep you playing.
