Anbernic is tackling the Nintendo DS, with a dupe that costs less than $100

Anbernic has made a name for itself by remaking pretty much ever Game Boy console in existence. Now, the company has a new console in its sights: the Nintendo DS.

The handheld maker confirmed it was making a clone of one of the best gaming consoles earlier this week, with promises that its version won’t set you back more than $100.

That price point matters. The original Nintendo DS retailed at $149.99, so a new dual-screen device at a lower tag will tempt retro gaming fans to no end. The company has also hinted at a possible new chip, according to Engadget, as well as four different colourways: black with red accents, teal, white and transparent.

The exact specs are still unknown, but we should find out in the coming weeks. The company has definitely nailed the design, though, as you can see in the video below.

Release timing is still fuzzy, but Anbernic has a track record of pushing products through fairly quickly after announcement, so it could be just around the corner

Opinion

This is a fun idea, but it needs to have the right price to find its market. A pocketable clamshell with two screens under $100 is easy to root for, especially for dipping into older libraries without a big spend. The real story starts once we see the chip choice and how comfortable it feels in hand.
