Whether you’re heading to the beach, setting up camp for a hiking weekend, spending the day fishing, or simply enjoying a barbecue in the park, a good cool box can make all the difference.
The Igloo Trailmate Journey Wheeled Cool Box isn’t just another ice chest; it’s designed as an all-in-one outdoor companion, packed with clever features that transform it into a portable cooler bar station.
After spending time exploring everything it has to offer, it’s clear that Igloo has put plenty of thought into making this cooler more than just somewhere to keep your drinks cold.
The Igloo Trailmate Journey is Built for Adventure
The first thing you’ll notice is its size and rugged appearance.
This is a substantial cooler that’s clearly designed for people who spend plenty of time outdoors.
It’s a beast of a cooler!
Despite its large capacity, it never feels like an oversized box on wheels. Instead, it feels purpose-built for adventures.
One of the standout features is the oversized all-terrain wheels.
Unlike the small plastic wheels found on many cool boxes, these are designed to tackle beaches, campsites, gravel tracks, woodland paths and uneven ground with ease.
Soft sand is often the downfall of wheeled coolers, but the Trailmate Journey is specifically built to cope with these more challenging environments.
Whether you’re transporting food and drinks to a lakeside picnic or pulling it across a campsite, the large wheels make a noticeable difference.

A Handle That Does Much More
The telescoping pull handle is another highlight.
It’s long, sturdy and comfortable to hold, making it easy to manoeuvre even when the cooler is fully loaded.
It’s also wide enough for two people to pull together if you’re carrying a particularly heavy load.
However, Igloo hasn’t stopped at simply giving it a good handle.
Hidden inside the main door compartment is a clever Butler Tray that clips onto the extended handle, instantly transforming it into a small side table.
It’s one of those features that initially seems like a novelty but quickly becomes incredibly useful.
The tray also adds two additional cup holders, extending your serving space without taking up any extra room in your camping setup.
It’s a genuinely smart piece of design that helps separate the Trailmate Journey from traditional cool boxes.
Plenty of Thought Put Into the Storage Features
Throughout the cooler, you’ll find small details that make life outdoors much easier.
There are an impressive six integrated cup holders positioned around the cooler, ensuring everyone has a safe place to set their drink.
The top lid even has a built-in tablet or smartphone dock, allowing you to prop up your device while following a recipe, watching a film at the campsite or simply playing music through a portable speaker.
On both sides of the cooler you’ll also find built-in bottle openers.
Why settle for one when you can have two, hey!
Another useful addition is the external storage net, providing somewhere to keep items that don’t need refrigeration.
Sun cream, books or sunglasses can all be stored separately without cluttering the main insulated compartment.
Clever Accessories for Outdoor Living Make Life Much Easier
One of the Igloo Trailmate Journey’s biggest strengths is its versatility.
It comes with two detachable accessory holders that can securely hold fishing rods, beach umbrellas or sun shelters upright while you’re setting up your base.
This instantly makes the cooler feel like more than just storage; it becomes part of your campsite or beach setup.
The top also features tie-down loops, allowing you to secure larger items using a few bungee cords.
Deck chairs, folded beach shelters, picnic blankets or umbrellas can all be strapped to the lid, turning the cooler into a practical transport trolley that carries far more than just food and drinks.
You will have your whole beach set up ready to go on two wheels.
If you’ve ever made multiple trips between the car and the beach, this feature alone could save you a lot of effort.
The Igloo Trailmate Journey Keeps Everything Cold
Of course, all the clever accessories would mean very little if the cooler didn’t perform well at its primary job, keeping things cool.
Thankfully, cooling performance is one of the Igloo Trailmate Journey’s strongest areas.
Igloo claims up to four days of ice retention, making it ideal for long weekends away, festivals, camping holidays and extended fishing trips.
I have seen YouTube review tests claiming it can even go up to a week.
Naturally, real-world performance depends on weather conditions, how often the lid is opened and how well it’s packed, but the insulation is impressive and more than capable of keeping food and drinks chilled for several days.
Inside, you’ll also find a removable food basket that keeps sandwiches, fruit and other delicate items elevated and organised above the ice.
It’s a simple addition that prevents food from becoming waterlogged while still benefiting from the cold air circulating inside the cooler.
Dry Storage Done Properly
One particularly useful feature is the removable sealed dry box that clips onto the exterior. This waterproof compartment is perfect for storing items such as:
* Car keys
* Smartphones
* Wallets
* Power banks
Rather than burying valuables amongst melting ice, you have a dedicated waterproof compartment that’s easy to access without opening the main cooler.
It’s one of those features you may not think you’ll use often until you’re caught in heavy rain or spending the day at the beach.
Once the adventure is over, cleaning is straightforward
The Trailmate Journey features a threaded drainage plug that unscrews easily, allowing melted ice to drain away quickly.
Now that’s easy cleaning once you’re done with your adventure.
Even better, it’s possible to attach a hose, making it even easier to rinse or drain the inside after storing Ice, food, fish or muddy camping equipment.
It’s a practical feature that makes maintaining the cooler far less of a chore.
A Cooler Stable Wherever You Leave It
Another thoughtful detail is the inclusion of anti-skid feet made of lightweight, durable Aluminium.
Rather than sliding around on decking, concrete or the back of a vehicle, the cooler remains securely in place.
It’s another small feature that adds to the premium feel and demonstrates how much attention Igloo has given to real-world usability.
Cooler Colour Choice to fit your style
While performance matters most, it’s always nice to have options when it comes to appearance.
The Trailmate Journey is available in a selection of different colours, allowing buyers to choose a style that best suits their personality or outdoor gear.
Whether you prefer something understated or a brighter finish for beach days, there’s likely an option that fits.
I went for the grey and black, and I love many of the other colour choices you can choose from too. Have a look and pick the style you like.
Areas That Could Be Improved on the Igloo Trailmate Journey
No product is perfect, and a couple of improvements would make an already excellent cooler even better in my honest opinion.
The biggest one concerns the main lid.
Although it opens wide, it cannot be completely removed.
Once you’ve arrived at your destination and the cooler becomes your food station for the day, being able to remove the lid entirely would make accessing the contents much easier and would create a more open bar space.
The second improvement would be the addition of dedicated side carry handles.
Given the cooler’s generous capacity, it can become very heavy when fully loaded with ice, food and drinks.
While the telescoping handle is excellent for pulling, loading the cooler into a car or lifting it into a campervan would be much easier with sturdy side handles that allow two people to share the weight.
Neither of these issues is a deal-breaker, but they would certainly improve usability even further.
My Final Verdict on the Igloo Trailmate Journey
The Igloo Trailmate Journey Wheeled Cool Box successfully goes beyond what most people expect from a cooler.
Yes, it keeps food and drinks cold for days, but it’s the numerous thoughtful extras that really set it apart.
The integrated Butler Tray, six cup holders, smartphone dock, bottle openers, waterproof storage box, accessory holders and tie-down loops all combine to create a product that’s designed around how people actually spend time outdoors.
It feels equally at home on a sandy beach, beside a fishing lake, heading up a mountain trail, at a campsite or during a family picnic, and the oversized wheels make transporting a fully loaded cooler far less of a struggle than many competitors.
A removable lid and side carrying handles would elevate it even further, but these are relatively minor criticisms of what is otherwise an exceptionally well-designed piece of outdoor equipment.
If you’re looking for more than just a cool box, something that becomes part of your outdoor setup rather than simply storing your food, the Igloo Trailmate Journey is one of the most versatile premium coolers currently available.
For campers, beach lovers, anglers and anyone who enjoys spending long days outdoors, it’s an investment that offers convenience, practicality and impressive performance in equal measure.
If you have the boot space to transport the Igloo Trailmate Journey, you’re up for hitting the hiking trails and keeping your friends hydrated, and if you want to own a cooler that looks like a beast and delivers, it’s the cooler of choice for you!

How About the Igloo Playmate?
And how about another extra product review? The iconic Igloo Playmate.
The Igloo Playmate is one of the most recognisable coolers ever made, with its iconic tent-top design and one-handed push-button opening that has made it a favourite for over 50 years.
I was lucky enough to pick one up at the Red Bull SoapBox Race in London, and for its size, I’m rather happy with it. Perfect for solo adventures.
Compact, lightweight and easy to carry, it’s the perfect choice for packed lunches, picnics, fishing trips, days at the beach or keeping drinks cold on a road trip.
Available in a range of sizes and colours, the Playmate features a unique swivel lid that opens from either side for quick access, while its durable hard-shell construction withstands everyday use.
With a 15-litre capacity, it’s good for holding around 6-9 drinks or your lunch if you prefer.
Although it’s designed for day trips rather than multi-day ice retention, its simplicity, reliability, and affordability have made it a timeless classic that remains a go-to cooler for millions of outdoor enthusiasts.
