Coastal Mississippi: A Lunch Stop With Gulf Breeze Flavour
The drive through Coastal Mississippi is smooth and sunlit, offering glimpses of the Gulf between stretches of beach towns and marshland.
When hunger arrives, Shaggy’s appears as the perfect place to pause.
The restaurant’s bright colours and beach‑bar energy create an atmosphere that feels instantly relaxing.
Plates of fried shrimp, fish tacos, and cold drinks make it easy to settle in and enjoy the moment. They do an amazing Margarita here, not to be missed.
If you have enough time, Shaggy’s do offer a charter experience where you can go out with a local skipper and enjoy catch-to-plate.
It is the kind of stop where you linger longer than planned, letting the breeze and the laid‑back vibe ease you deeper into vacation mode. But don’t forget the drive ahead to Louisiana!

By late afternoon, Lafayette comes into view, radiating the energy of a city known for its music, food, and vibrant blend of Cajun and Creole heritage.
Checking into Candlewood Suites Lafayette provides a comfortable home base, offering a quiet and convenient place to unwind after a long day on the road.
Enjoy Breakfast at Five Mile Eatery
The morning begins with a visit to Five Mile Eatery, a counter‑serve restaurant that focuses on organic, vegetarian, and locally sourced dishes.
The craft coffee is bold and smooth, offering exactly the kind of start needed for a full day of exploring.
The menu is fresh and thoughtful, making breakfast feel both nourishing and energising.
Rouler Bike Tour: Seeing Lafayette From a New Angle
The next experience on the itinerary is the Rouler Bike Tour, a newly launched guided ride that offers a refreshing perspective on Lafayette.

The biggest surprise was stumbling across Cypress Lake, a swamp located within the Louisiana University campus, which was the last thing I would have expected on a University campus and something I would have missed out on unless I was doing the cycling tour.
Lunch at La Cuisine de Maman
After the ride, lunch at La Cuisine de Maman provides comfort and authenticity.
Located inside Vermilionville Historic Village, the restaurant serves slow‑cooked, “mom‑style” Cajun and Creole dishes.
The chicken and sausage gumbo, fried catfish, and hearty plate lunches taste like they have been perfected over generations.
The relaxed atmosphere and historic village setting make the meal feel even more special, as though you have stepped into a family kitchen steeped in tradition.
And a visit to Lafayette wouldn’t be complete without trying Boudin from Johnson’s Boucaniere. They became the first dry goods store to commercially sell boudin, a South Louisiana delicacy, in the 1940s. Known for their world-famous Boudin, it’s a must-try.
Exploring Downtown Lafayette
The afternoon is ideal for wandering through Downtown Lafayette, a lively area filled with creativity and local character.
The experience begins at Wild Child Wine Shop, where natural wines and friendly conversation create a welcoming atmosphere.
From there, the journey continues to SOLA Violins, a space where craftsmanship and music come together beautifully.
The Acadiana Centre for the Arts offers exhibitions and performances that highlight the region’s artistic spirit.
A visit to Beausoleil Books & Whisper Room reveals a charming bookstore with a hidden speakeasy tucked inside, creating a delightful blend of literature and ambience.
Nearby, Rukus Board Shop showcases skate culture with a Louisiana twist, while Lagniappe Records provides a haven for vinyl lovers.
Fashion and gifts take centre stage at Cocodrie by Colette, and handcrafted hats with local flair can be found at The Cajun Hatter.
No visit to downtown Lafayette feels complete without stopping at Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe, one of the last remaining Borden’s locations in the country.
Enjoying a cone while strolling to Parc Sans Souci creates a perfect moment, especially when pausing at the Lafayette sign and water feature for a memorable photo.

I went for the Crayfish bisque and crab spaghetti, which was sensational. Loved watching the chefs in the open-plan kitchen work their craft, grilling over the fire pit.

The band, Grandpa Country Music, brings storytelling, twang, and toe‑tapping rhythms that fill the room with warmth.
