OnePlus is skipping built-in magnets on the OnePlus 15, and the reason is straightforward: magnets are too heavy.
In a OnePlus 15 briefing, senior product marketing manager Rudolf Xu said the team prioritised a bigger battery over MagSafe-style convenience. That choice delivers a 7,300mAh cell with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging, plus support for magnetic accessories through a case rather than the phone itself.
That lines up with what we’ve seen before, where you still get fast wireless via AirVOOC but need a magnetic case for snap-on chargers or car mounts.
OnePlus argues that internal space is already tight with the wireless coil, and adding a magnet ring would reduce battery capacity and add weight, which contradicts its goal of going big on stamina.
And as TechRadar points out, others play a similar game by calling phones Qi2-ready through cases instead of building magnets in.
The OnePlus 15 launches globally on November 13, featuring a 7,300mAh battery that’s a sizable upgrade over the already impressive 6,000mAh cell in the OnePlus 13 and larger than flagship stalwarts like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. And when it comes to charging, you still get quick 50W wireless, while wired hits 120W with SuperVOOC for fast top-ups.
In essence, you trade the convenience of snapping straight to a charger for longer battery life and a lighter feel.
Magnetic mounts still work through a first- or third-party case, so bridging the gap remains easy. And for most people who plug in or drop onto a pad at home, the bigger battery and quick top-ups will matter most.
OnePlus could perhaps add magnets later, but the current message is that battery comes first. So, for this generation, the choice is to keep the phone slimmer and pack in more milliamp-hours, even if that means letting the case handle the magnets.
