Samsung has officially launched its new Galaxy XR headset, jumping headfirst into the mixed reality scene by blending multimodal AI, an open Android platform and a sleek design.

Teaming up with Google and Qualcomm, Samsung’s Galaxy XR is gunning straight for Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro with a lower price of $1,799. The Galaxy XR boasts a razor-sharp micro-OLED dual display with 29 million pixels, the latest Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and a wide 109-degree field of view.

It’s got also got a detachable battery, so the headset stays light and comfortable. Sensors, which are fused with Google’s Gemini AI, track your eyes, hands, and head to elevate interactions where you can control things with your voice, gestures, or vision.

The best part is that Galaxy XR runs Android XR and supports OpenXR, so all of your favourite mobile apps can be loaded up here without fail alongside new experiences made for the headset by developers.

As part of this announcement, Samsung has also unveiled its long-term XR roadmap, with plans for AI glasses and other gadgets, all anchored under one ecosystem.

Early impressions of the headset have been pretty good – with numerous outlets confirming that the XR does indeed contend with – and in some cases – beat the Vision Pro. With that in mind, the Galaxy XR feels like one of the most compelling headsets we’ve seen in a while and if successful might force Apple to rethink how it positions the Vision Pro.
