Key Features

Introduction

The Tefal Blend up is a compact, sturdy and versatile personal blender that’s ideal for making everything from summer smoothies and crushed ice to cool you down in a heatwave, to sauces to liven up your meals, and plant milk to be kind to animals and the planet.

It’s simple and speedy to operate, and is easy to clean up afterwards. It’s also got two different size containers, both of which can be transformed into takeaway cups with the addition of the included stoppered lids.

Design and Features

  • Sturdy design
  • Two cup sizes, both of which can be used for travel
  • Eight pre-set programs

The Tefal Blend Up consists of a sturdy base unit, two plastic blending cups (one large, one small), two stoppered lids, one screwable lid and a brush for cleaning.

The front of the base unit is shiny black plastic, while the casing around the sides and back is a sleek brushed metallic blue-grey, which Tefal calls Boreal Blue. The base unit has four suckered feet on the underside so it sits securely on your counter and doesn’t move even when crushing ice.

On the front of the base unit, the eight automatic programs are listed in a circle: smoothies; ice crush; cold soup; plant milk; dips; sauce; auto clean; silence; plus a large start/stop button in the middle. There’s also a pulse button, which you can press and hold for manual action.

There are two sizes of blending cups, both with easy to read measurements. For convenience, one side has imperial measurements (ounces and cups) and the other has metric (millilitres).

The smaller cup takes liquid up to 400ml/15oz. The larger cup is maximum of 700ml/24oz.

The inclusion of the two lids means you can pop a lid on and use either container as a takeaway cup, cutting down on faff and washing up.

The blade unit houses six blades, which use Powelix technology, designed to blend up to 30% faster than regular blades. When you’re ready to use the blender, the blades screw securely onto the bottom of each cup; it can also be stored on either cup too, keeping the blades tucked away safely.

The screw-on travel lids were leak-proof, and they’re lightweight so the drinks aren’t too heavy to carry around. Again, with the inclusion of two different cup sizes, you can opt for the smaller size if you need to fit it in a small bag; or the larger cup if you’re off on a long hike.

The eight preset programmes cover most jobs that you’d want to do at the touch of a button, but the manual further helps by including eight easy-to-follow recipes covering each program (and the Tefal app has more than 100 additional recipes).

So whether you want to whizz up a banana smoothie, gazpacho, hummus or almond milk, just grab the listed ingredients and follow the ingredient amounts detailed in the booklet. You can also use the silent mode if you want to avoid the sudden loud noise of the blender.

Once you’ve finished using the blender, you can take advantage of the unit’s auto clean mode, which uses water and a drop of washing-up liquid and takes 30 seconds.

For a deeper clean, the cups and flip-top lids are all dishwasher safe. The base should only be wiped down with a damp cloth, while the blades need to be hand-washed. I found it easier to use the auto-clean option, and then rinse the components with hot water, using the provided brush to remove any tougher bits of mess.

Performance

  • Great at crushing ice for frozen drinks
  • The pre-set programs perform well
  • Easy to use

I first ran an ice crushing test, to see how well the blender coped with a hard job. The instructions direct you to use five ice cubes, each 2x2x2cm. Once you’ve put the ice cubes in, you screw on the lid and then turn it upside down. Screw it onto the top of the base unit by lining up the arrow on the lid of the blender pot and locking it into place.

As soon as I switched the blender on at the plug, the dials lit up and you just press which of the eight you want. Once I’d pressed the ice crush button and it began flashing, I then needed to click the centre start button. The program then counts down on a preset time of 30 seconds.

Once the cycle was finished, the blender beeped a few times to indicate it was complete. Once I’d unscrewed the cup from the blender unit, turned it back upside down and unscrewed the lid, the cup was full of the finest, fluffiest frozen ice, with the look of powdered snow. The ice got a bit stuck in the jar and wouldn’t just tip out, so I had to use a spoon to get it all out.

It’s good to have this kind of power thanks to the mains lead. Most portable battery powered blenders, such as the KitchenAid Go Cordless Personal Blender, can’t deal with ice. The Ninja Blast Max Portable Blender can do ice, but it only has the one cup, so isn’t quite as flexible.

Once the ice from the Tefal Blend Up was in a glass, I added some pineapple juice and the result was a win, giving exactly the kind of consistency you’d expect in a daiquiri cocktail. It absorbed the colour of the liquid looked very tempting indeed. The three of us who tested it were all impressed with the flavour and consistency, and the crushed ice would work perfectly for any frozen soft drink or cocktail.

Next, I tried out a pineapple and coconut smoothie. I added a cup of fresh pineapple chopped into chunks, three ice cubes, half a cup of coconut milk, quarter of a cup of yogurt – I used Greek organic – four fresh mint leaves, and half a table spoon of coconut flakes.

I screwed on the lid, turn the pot upside down, and attached it to the blender. I then pressed the smoothie button, which has a preset of one minute, and then pressed the start button.

The resulting smoothie was a delight. All the ingredients had been blended really well with no stray bits of mint or pineapple lumps.

Should you buy it?

Buy if you want a versatile, high-performing blender

Simple to use, compact and with excellent performance, this is a great blender for smaller jobs.

Don’t buy if you need more capacity

If you need to blend more liquid, then a full-size blender will be a better option.

Final Thoughts

The Tefal Blend Up is a versatile blender with a stylish, compact design. It performed well in my tests and was easy to clean up afterwards. With eight preset programs, you’ll be able to make a range of drinks and sauces with this machine, while the two cups offer some more flexibility. If you want something bigger, then our guide to the best blenders can help.
